We have a unique opportunity this month when noted University or Washington oceanographer Dr. John Delaney will be on the Grays Harbor Collage campus and in the community speaking about his team's efforts to create a cable network of deep-ocean sensors off the Harbor and along the pacific coast
Sponosered by GHC speakers committee, Dr. Delaney's presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, January 24th , at the bishop center , when he will share his studies of the physical , chemical and biological mid-ocean interactions and his bold plan to gather unprecedented amounts of oceanic data. His visit to the Harbor is coordinated by GHC alum Pat Hughes, who's efforts in bringing Dr. Delaney to the harbor and to the college are most appreciated. His talk on January 24th is free and open to the public. meetings with GHC math an d science faculty and students, as well as younger students in the Aberdeen School District, are also planned.

All sites will be linked to the internet via submarine eletro-optical cables, forming a system to document and measure erupting volcanoes, undersea earthquakes, storms and other aspects of the ocean behavior
Dr. Delaney's efforts ton gather unprecedented amounts of oceanic data are part of the national science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative. In addition to his research project, he heads the oceanography department within the UW's School of Environment
