Grays Harbor College Carpentry Students Build Floor Systems

Grays Harbor College Carpentry Technology students learned about floor systems this quarter. The class focused on two types of systems: dimensional lumber and engineered I-joist. Students also assembled a demonstration model of a truss system.

During the first four weeks of fall quarter, Carpentry students built, deconstructed, and rebuilt each type of floor system. The students also created the planning documents, estimations, and drawings that are required by building departments, employers, and clients. The remaining seven weeks of the quarter will focus on wall framing.

According to Kelly Williams, one of GHC’s Carpentry instructors, students tend to assemble the engineered I-joist system faster than the dimensional lumber system. “The I-joists are straighter and have fewer flaws, and we can order the joist in any length we desire. This makes the system more productive.”

Dimensional lumber, on the other hand, contains flaws like knots, twists, bows, cracks, and other inconsistencies. “So, it takes a little longer to build with 2x12s and maintain acceptable tolerances.” Williams explained. “Industry generally allows framing to vary from the plans by ¼”, but we strive for an 1/8-inch tolerance in our class.”
